Care & Maintenance

A Lifetime Grinder Needs Regular Care

The OG1 is built from 304 stainless steel and designed to last. Most performance issues over time come from residue buildup, not material wear. A few minutes of regular cleaning is all it takes to keep it running exactly as it should.

What the OG1 Is Designed to Grind

The OG1 is designed for herbs. Normal use means grinding dry plant material. Under these conditions, the 304 stainless steel blades will not meaningfully dull or wear down.

How to Clean It

Disassemble the grinder fully before cleaning.

Soft bristle toothbrush

Dry cleaning (recommended for regular maintenance):

  • Use a small soft brush. A clean toothbrush works well. Clear residue from the blades, chamber walls, and collection base
  • Wipe all surfaces with a dry cloth
  • Reassemble once all parts are clean and completely dry

Faucet with running water

Wet cleaning (for moderate buildup):

  • Remove the O-ring before washing and set it aside
  • Hand wash with warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap
  • Use a soft brush to work into the blade area. Take care, the blades are sharp
  • Rinse thoroughly
  • Dry every part completely before reassembly, paying close attention to the magnetic closures
  • Refit the O-ring only after all parts are fully dry

brush and rubbing alcohol

Deep cleaning (for heavy buildup):

  • Remove the O-ring and set it aside. Do not include it in the soak
  • Place all disassembled stainless parts into a ziplock bag
  • Add enough 70% or 91% isopropyl alcohol to fully submerge the parts
  • Seal the bag and let it soak for 15 to 30 minutes
  • Remove the parts and brush out any remaining residue with a soft brush
  • Rinse with warm water, then dry every part thoroughly before reassembly
  • Refit the O-ring only after all parts are fully dry

A Note on the Magnetic Closures

The OG1 uses three magnetic closures to connect the top lid, mid chamber, and base without threads or screws. The stainless steel body and blades resist corrosion well. The magnet housings are not stainless steel and are not corrosion-proof. If moisture is left sitting on the magnet housings after wet cleaning, surface rust can develop on the housing. This is true of virtually every magnetic grinder on the market.

To prevent it: after any wet cleaning or deep soak, dry the magnetic contact points thoroughly with a cloth before reassembly. Do not leave the grinder wet or disassembled in a damp environment. Surface rust on a magnet housing caused by insufficient drying is not covered under warranty. A few extra seconds with a dry cloth prevents it entirely.

What to Avoid

These actions can cause damage that is not covered under warranty.

  • Putting the grinder in a dishwasher
  • Soaking any part in water for extended periods
  • Leaving the grinder wet after cleaning. Always dry thoroughly
  • Soaking the O-ring in isopropyl alcohol
  • Grinding rocks, sand, or mineral-contaminated material
  • Introducing grit, dirt, or abrasive particles into the chamber
  • Using metal tools, wire brushes, or abrasives on the blades
  • Grinding non-plant materials
  • Using harsh chemicals, bleach, or abrasive cleaners
  • Storing in a damp or corrosive environment

Performance Over Time

If the grind feels less smooth or less effective than it used to, cleaning is almost always the fix. Residue builds up on the blades and chamber walls over time and reduces efficiency. A thorough dry brush, wet clean, or deep isopropyl soak typically restores full performance.

The O-Ring

Every OG1 ships with an O-ring that sits between the grinding chamber and the base. It softens the feel of the rotation for people who prefer a slightly cushioned grind. It does not affect grinding performance either way. The OG1 works exactly the same with or without it.

Try it both ways and use what feels right. Always remove the O-ring before any wet cleaning or alcohol soak, dry it separately, and refit it once everything is completely dry. Replacement O-rings are available by contacting us at shopspecular.com.
